PEC Zwolle has taken a significant step by extending the contract of midfielder Ryan Thomas. The New Zealand international, a key figure for the Eredivisie club, has extended his commitment with the 'Blauwvingers' (Bluefingers, PEC Zwolle's nickname) until at least mid-2028. Thomas, 31, has already played 213 matches in two spells at the club and has, after a series of injuries, grown into an indispensable leader on the field.

Ryan Thomas expressed his delight about the extension. “I would like to stay at PEC Zwolle, that is no secret,” he said after agreeing to his new deal. “The club has always been good to me and the supporters are amazing. As long as I can be of value, I will give everything for this club. The feeling is good on both sides, and that is, of course, the most important thing for a long-term collaboration. I am very happy that I get to continue playing for the club from my city for the next two years as well.”

Technical director Gerry Hamstra of PEC Zwolle emphasized Thomas's value. “Ryan can read a game like no other and knows what is required in every phase of a match,” Hamstra stated. “Ryan is also an important part of the team as an example and an extension for the younger players and the coach. Together with him, we first want to finish this season well, after which a wonderful World Cup awaits Ryan, and we would like to continue with him next season.”

Statistics underscore Ryan Thomas's importance to PEC Zwolle. With Thomas in the starting lineup, the team conceded an average of 1.7 goals per 90 minutes this season. Without him in the squad, this average significantly increased to 2.9 goals conceded, demonstrating his crucial role in the team's defensive stability.

Despite his impressive club career, injuries have limited Ryan Thomas's international career to 25 caps for the All Whites over a twelve-year period. Nevertheless, he is a strong candidate for the New Zealand squad for this year's FIFA Men's World Cup. Between his two spells at PEC Zwolle, Thomas briefly played for PSV Eindhoven in 2018, but his time there was also marked by injury woes, meaning the former Melville United, Waikato FC, and Western Suburbs player never got an uninterrupted run of games.

The contract extension of Ryan Thomas is a clear signal of PEC Zwolle's ambitions and the mutual appreciation between player and club. His leadership, experience, and tactical insight will be invaluable for the Eredivisionist in the coming seasons, both on and off the pitch.
